One night, as six-year old Laura and her eight-year old brother slept, she heard what she thought was the sound of a car backfiring . . . she ran from her room to see if her mother was ok. Laura will never forget what she saw next . . . her mother, lying still in a pool of blood, had been murdered by one of the men she had been seeing. At age 8, Laura came to live at the Ranch, where she flourished and began the long process of healing. As part of that process, Laura wrote a poem about her memories, and a song was derived from her poem and story.

I Believe in Heaven
Vocal: Sara Hickman
Words and Music: Diana Jones

My mother loved me,
my father never said.
Late at night I could hear them fight
from my room inside my bed.
My brother is quiet,
he’s angry deep inside.
I remember when he was happy
before our mother died.

Chorus:
But I believe in Heaven, in Heaven.
There must be lots of moms up there.
She will be waiting for me, if I believe.

My dreams are scary,
I dream about that day.
Thought I heard a car backfire
and then they took my mom away.
But sometimes I see her
when my dreams are really good.
She touches my hair, whispers in my ear,
"I would be with you if I could."

Chorus
So I believe in Heaven.
There aren’t any guns up there.
Children and mothers, so many others
who all believe in Heaven, in Heaven
