Many of our children have experienced horrendous violence and devastating loss. The stories vary but often include molestation, other forms of abuse, and the violent death of parents - experiences that are not easy to talk about. We find that many of these children are able to draw, paint or mold what they cannot speak in a therapy session. They thus discover a route through grief and loss to healing and a new life. Carol Priour, Expressive Arts Director, works with HCYR's clinicians, houseparents and program staff to ensure that children have the opportunity and the essential materials, and that they can enter the world of creative expression with loving support and guidance. The paintings below, along with many others from 30 years of collecting them, are on show at the Hill Country Gallery located in the Meadows Fine Arts Center on HCYR's campus. Visitors are welcome.
Above, left to right: It Hurts Him, Too, by Louis, 12; Broken Wings Can Fly, by Kimberly, 10; Mask, by Connie, 17; Heart Flower by Sara, 10 -- To the right: Pink Flower by Kim, age 15. Because loading graphics may slow down your computer, we will feature just a few pieces of children's art at a time, updating the selections regularly. The children's art is on continuous display in the Hill Country Gallery at the Meadows Fine Arts Center in Ingram, and is frequently shown in the Corral newsletter.
