The abuse Lisa suffered in her childhood home was more than anyone should have to endure. She had barely reached puberty when she attempted suicide and was sent to a psychiatric hospital to recover. Shortly after, in the early 1990s, Lisa came to live at Hill Country Youth Ranch, bringing a volume of poetry she had written from her pain, and from the experience of redemption that followed.

Broken Wings Can Fly

I’ve been tryin’ to fly,
and I can’t see the sky.
My heart is beaten and torn,
and my soul is tired and worn.

Chorus:
He made the lame man walk,
He gave the blind man eyes.
From the Master’s hand,
even broken wings can fly.

The nights have grown so cold
as the days fight to unfold.
Everything feels so wrong,
it seems that I don’t belong.

Chorus

The moon starts to fade away,
and all is shadow and shade,
and my dreams,
they’re beginning to die.
I’m wanderin’ in the dark,
with no love in my heart.
I shake a fist and demand to know why.

Chorus

I’ve been tryin’ to fly,
look and see the sky.
From the Master’s hand,
even broken wings can fly.
