Born with cerebral palsy and wearing leg braces, Danny’s childhood was full of the scrutiny that comes when one is "different". For Danny, the step of letting others know him was to take a chance far bigger than he had been willing to do when he first came to live at the Ranch. But he did take that chance. On a summer trip to Colorado, he joined other Youth Ranchers in climbing to the peak of a mountain with an elevation of 13,000 ft. In fact, he led his team to the top. After the descent, Danny sat in his tent at base camp and wrote a poem.

Take a Chance
Vocal: Diana Jones
Words and Music: Danny Baird, Diana Jones

Don’t be afraid,
everyone has a different start,
who you are,
all the special things that set you apart
even though you fear
what people will say,
they just might not turn away.

Chorus:
Take a chance, shine your light,
reach your arms up to the sky,
sing your song out to the stars,
show the world who you are.

Reach for the top . . . share the climb
and share your heart, don’t you stop.
The journey’s long and it can be rough,
but if you try, you might find
the mountain’s not so high
as it seemed at the start.

Chorus

When the night
closes in around you just hold tight.
There’s a little bit of you
and a little bit of me in everything.
The night will come around,
and it will bring
the sun back again. (Chorus Repeat.)
