Presenting Christ in Stained Glass

Jesus with children

Meadows Chapel's stained glass windows portray the stages of Christ's ministry from baptism to ascension. The nine windows were designed by Carol Priour, wife of  Director Gary Priour. Carol spent more than a year in designing, painting and firing the glass portraits. A total of 21 individual faces are depicted. Each took up to two weeks of painstaking brushing and firing, one color at a time.  Starting over became common occurrence when a result did not match the  inspiration.

Christ stumbling under the weight of the cross became a challenge that included the painting and firing of six faces.  The five characters chosen to surround Christ were painstakingly chosen from Biblical accounts of those Christ met on his way through the streets to Calvary.  The ranged in their responses from mockery to the reaching out to offer comfort.

The window above the altar depicts the ascending Christ, surrounded by clear glass and appearing as part of the hill country landscape. This piece, six months in the making, was a collaborative effort by Carol Priour and husband, Gary, who worked the drawings of the components on walls in their home, then took them to a nearby glass shop for cutting, painting and firing.
