Vocational Skills Training is Key for Many

Some of our graduates attend college, but many are headed directly to the job market. It is thus important that we provide a comprehensive vocational training program to allow each resident to develop employable skills. HCYR has in place work programs in various departments, and vocational shops where young people can learn woodworking, mechanics, horticulture, landscaping, video or audio studio editing, and computer skills. Over time, youths can apprentice in several such work areas.  Every student is given the opportunity to work in the summer to earn personal spending money, doing landscaping, gardening, tree trimming and other outdoor tasks.

Preparation for Adult Living Given to All

In addition to vocational work opportunities, all students participate in the Preparation for Adult Living series of classes sponsored by the State for all teenagers in foster care.  Topics include applying for a job, setting up a bank account, managing a budget, renting an apartment, etc. This curriculum is supplemented by HCYR with workshops on career development strategies for high schoolers each summer. At an annual Career Development Week, speakers come from different professions to answer questions and outline the road that leads to success in their chosen field.
