by Tony Gallucci Ed Brune Charter High School has been named by the Region 20 Education Service Center as one of the region’s top secondary schools in Science. Instructional Director Tripp Davenport, who has taught science and other subjects at the Brune Charter Schools for four years, was notified of the honor in October. The recognition is based on criteria that include significant gains in Science TAKS scores, combined with consistently high Science TAKS scores by Brune High School students. That pairing shows that Brune students were already performing at a high level, and continue to improve in the areas most often cited nationally as in decline. According to Superintendent Mike Wood, "This recognition is based on data for all public schools, not just Charter schools, and that makes the award even more impressive." Davenport was justly proud of the recognition for his students, but whizzed ahead setting up an experiment, with hardly a moment to pose for pictures lest it interrupt his class for the day as he demonstrated the production of acid rain by the burning of carbon based fuels. His students peppered him with observations and questions as smoke filtering through a neutral solution turned it bright red when the pH dipped. Superintendent Wood gives full credit to Mr. Davenport, who established frequent benchmark assessments for students in Science classes and also initiated improvements in hands-on student labs. "Mr. Davenport added effective supplemental instructional activities that have proven successful in helping our students perform well." Davenport just returned from representing Ed Brune Charter School at a Secondary Science Showcase that was held at the Education Service Center in San Antonio in November. In a presentation to other schools, Brune Charter School was chosen to highlight initiatives that have contributed to outstanding student achievement and success at the school. |
