Intensive Supervision Centers Provide Refuge for Healing |

The most highly structured end of HCYR's Continuum of Care are its two psychiatric assessment centers -- the Doss Center for boys, and the Hosler Center for girls. In these units, one-on-one staffing is available 24 hours a day and children are kept in a secure environment, with therapeutic services constantly present. During their stay in Doss or Hosler, children work with professionals who identify medical and treatment needs, and who work to help them stabilize. Symptoms may include suicidal ideation, outpourings of anger, seizure disorders and other conditions which threaten their safety and that of others. The educational program for Intense and Specialized level children is available next door to the Hosler Unit at the Cailloux Charter School. In this special environment, children can continue academic learning while healing from the worst of traumas, including the loss of parents or severe abuse. They stay in Doss or Hosler until they are ready to move into one of HCYR's 14 homes that extend the continuum through to Residential Treatment and on to Basic Foster Care. The two Centers house eight children each and provide a safe, structured environment much like that provided in a psychiatric hospital. The children have daily goals. Positive reinforcement, logical consequences and a level system are a few of the tools used to break negative patterns and enhance social skills. Having these two Centers on campus allows the children to stay in the same community of caregivers as they heal and move into more open settings. |
